Fever is an internal body temperature increase to abnormally high levels. It is a common symptom of numerous underlying medical conditions. A typical fever usually increases the patient's temperature by at least around two degrees Farenheit (one degree Celcius), however the expected temperature for a fever varies depending upon from where in the body the reading is taken. Fever is differentiated from hyperthermia in that the body's regulation of temperature is set higher in the former, whereas in the latter it is not.
Causes:
Diagnosis
Diagnosis of fever is made by a doctor or medical professional. Generally, a temperature reading may be taken, however, the results may vary due to a variety of reasons, including the location of the reading, the patient's normal body temperature, and other external factors.
Treatment
Fever does not necessarily need treatment, as it is a sign of a problem in the patient's body. The underlying condition may need treatment, however. With fever there is a risk of dehydration, so drinking enough fluids is recommended. Antipyretics may be used to reduce heat.
