Vitiligo

Vitiligo is a skin disease which causes depigmentation (loss of pigment) and results in white or pale skin patches. The condition is chronic and is thought to affect as high as 2% of the worldwide population. No prevention methods are currently known, and even the underlying causes of vitiligo are uncertain.

Symptoms:

  • Premature hair graying
  • Sensitivity to sunlight (photodermatitis risk)
  • Skin color patches (mainly white, also purple and golden brown)
  • Uveitis

Causes:

The specific causes of vitiligo are unknown. Several theories have been provided:

  • Autoimmune disease
  • Emotional stress
  • Inherited susceptibility (genetics)
  • Melanocyte self-destruction
  • Sunburn

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of vitiligo is made by a doctor or medical professional. A biopsy, blood testing (blood cell count and anti-nuclear antibodies check), thyroid function testing, and eye testing (uveitis check) are all possibilities for use in diagnosing vitiligo.

Treatment

Treatment for vitiligo is sometimes treated by changing the skin's appearance without actually resolving the underlying medical condition. Repigmentation may also occur through a variety of means, including sunlight and certain creams. Gingko biloba has been shown in one study as effective, when administered orally, in impeding the progress of vitiligo that spreads slowly.
