Diagnosis

Diagnosis of heartburn is made by a doctor or medical professional, by either biochemical (ambulatory pH monitoring or upper gastrointestinal x-ray series) or mechanical (biopsy, endoscopy, or manometry) means.

Treatment

Heartburn is commonly treated with different medicines, including: alginates, antacids, H2-receptor antagonists, proton-pump inhibitors and sodium bicarbonate. Diet restrictions, especially of foods high in fat and caffeinated beverages, are also useful in treating heartburn.

Prevention

Raising the upper body can prevent or provide relief for heartburn which occurs while lying down. Avoiding certain foods such as chocolate, peppermint and chamomile tea prior to going to bed can also help, as these relax the opening between the esophagus and stomach. Refraining from wearing tight clothing around the abdomen may also be beneficial.
